Book Review: Lick (#1 Stage Dive) by Kylie Scott

Lick (Stage Dive, #1)Lick by Kylie Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Such a hot read! Number one, the title hooked me basically from the beginning. Lick like guitar but also super animalistic... creative!

Evelyn Thomas has the most planned out life plan. Get good grades. Graduate with an architecture degree. Work in an architecture firm with her dad... sounds boring? Well it's all Evelyn has ever known so for her 21st birthday she ventures to LAS VEGAS with her bestie in the hopes of having a night of fun and getting over her little s-e-x issue. she just wants to find a one night stand and be wham-bam-thank-you-ma'amed... But life is NEVER that easy. Not when Evelyn wakes up with a wicked hangover, a fuzzy memory, and a giant rock on her left finger. She's MARRIED! In Vegas?... When does that ever happen?... Exactly. It's Vegas. Ish happens.

But Ev isn't just married to some guy. Oh no she went out all big. She's hitched to Stage Dive's lead guitarist David Ferris. Yummy... But since Ev doesn't know who David is he's giving her a chance to remember and possibly rekindle what they had that one night in Vegas. But it's not going to be that easy on Evelyn when she's surrounded by drugs, a jealous ex, crazy friends, stuck up parents, and one hot alpha male wanting Ev and only Ev.

"Love isn’t always smooth or straightforward. It can be messy and painful … Doesn’t mean it isn’t still the most incredible thing that can ever happen to you." -David Ferris

I loved that it started off right when she's waking up the next day. With books like this, the blurb already tells the reader that the main character is married and I detest when authors give a chapter or two leading up to the morning after because then I end up skimming. *gasp* But Kylie Scott was rocking this thing and got my attention so quick!!

Overall, I think this was a hot read. The chemistry was so fired up that I had to take a step back from my iPad a few times to cool down. I'm definitely giving Kylie Scott's first book in the series 4 STARS out of 5 STARS. I think Ev and David are so cute! I wish the epilogue would have been a couple years in the future but it is a series so I'm expecting some Ev and David glimpses in the next books!

GO READ THIS!!

Synopsis
I am a slut. No worries. I've come to terms with it, and you will too. I’m not one of those girls who thinks she’s too plain, too fat, too skinny, too shy … no, I don’t have that kind of luck. I’m the girl who knows she’s just right for everyone. — Denver

A reputation as a manwhore–with–a–heart–of–gold tends to precede me. But, I don’t do girls with issues, that is until this girl. It's this girl I want to fix. This girl I want to protect. And maybe … more. — Ransom

Being in love with the same girl your entire life isn't all it's cracked up to be. She uses me in every way imaginable. How does she see me? I am her perpetual one-night stand. No strings, no attachments. Just mind-numbing sex ... for her anyway. — Greer

Feeling like the life is being choked out of her in the small town of Anaconda, Montana, Denver Dempsey craves the escape that college offers … even if that means leaving her “best friend with benefits” and looking for a new way to forget. Thinking she's found the perfect hookup in Ransom, Denver's outlook on college is bright. That is, until Greer shows up looking for a second chance, and Ransom's interest turns to hatred.

Love. Hate. Triangle.

Who's using who?

Used (Unlovable, #1)My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was given a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review

Denver Dempsey is a hot mess. She's been told how low she is her whole life so now she actually believes she is a real life slut and that's all she will ever be. I hated how self deprecating she is. I just wanted to shake her and tell her how she's wanted and loved and respected by everyone around her. She's caught in a love triangle between her long time "friend-with-benefits" Greer and the bull rider she's always been a little obsessed with Ransom. The book takes place at a college in Montana where they all participate in competitive rodeo.

This book is really good. But I was so upset when it just ended! There was no big cliffy but we get absolutely no resolution. Just a nice "Check out the next book..." So that frustrated me a bit. But other than that I think the book was really emotional. The book lands on certain subjects that others have a hard time dealing with such as abuse and rape, but it gave the book dimension and was well plotted.

I really like Ransom. Greer is... well you'll have to read to find out. But I just felt bad for him throughout the whole book and then suddenly I could care less for him. You'll have to read to find out why. But back to Ransom. He's the man that Denver needs. She's already petty tough and strong, but she needs a man that will see how precious she is and never let go for fear of breaking her.

Overall, I think this was a wonderful book. I think it's a coming of age type of book. I'm giving this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS. I cannot wait for the next book in the Unlovable Series!!

Since the dawn of time, Lynetta Halat has lived to read and has written innumerable stories and plays. A lover of good books, bad boys, and kickass tunes, she'd always dreamt of penning books that people could connect with and remember. She also has a secret penchant for wringing the emotions out of unsuspecting readers, and she collects reader's tears in much the same way that wine connoisseurs collect their favorite vintage.

Her first novel, Every Rose, was the perfect catalyst to launch her into the world of publishing, effectively burrowing her way into the hearts and minds of readers throughout the world. Everything I've Never Had was her follow-up adult romance novel. Now, she has penned Used, a New Adult Romance that she hopes sinks its teeth into you and doesn't let go.

Synopsis
Calvin Parish
They call me Hero.
I defend.
I protect.
I ask for nothing in return, and that makes me good.
Doesn’t it?

That which makes me the ultimate predator also feeds dark impulses I’ve learned to control—until I bring her too close. For years I’ve watched her from afar, but what started out as duty has become obsession.
Cataline Ford
I work hard.
I play by the rules.
I’m content.
My scars are quiet and invisible, and that keeps me hidden.
Doesn’t it?

One fateful walk home, I’m taken by someone I didn’t know I should fear. Captive and afraid, nobody will tell me why I’m confined to this hauntingly beautiful mansion. I’m given everything; I have nothing. He takes what he needs from me, and for that I hate him. But I might have loved him once.

And just because you’re reading this doesn’t mean I survive him.

heartdividerPost

Excerpt
Because I’m lost in my thoughts, I don’t hear Cataline enter the room. Her tight black dress cuts across her mid-thighs, and her cleavage teases from a plummeting neckline. She’s done her makeup for probably the second time since arriving at the mansion.

“What is this?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.

“What?”

Jasmine drifts under my nose as she walks away from me to her seat.

“I told you not to dress up for dinner.”

“I thought you’d like it,” she says, lowering herself gracefully into the chair. Her back is straight as a rod, and her fingers are laced. “You don’t?”

Norman decorates the table with food as I stare Cataline down. He clears his throat. “For dinner, we have—”

“Leave us.”

He pauses. Though my eyes are still fastened on Cataline, I know he’s watching me as he bows his head. “As you wish, sir.”

I stand and slowly walk the line of the long table. My footsteps echo through the hall, appropriately menacing. I’ve just come from a burning building but am back in my suit and tie to maintain appearances. And my ridiculous glasses, which I remove and toss aside. She’ll believe I’ve just returned from the office. When I’m standing over her, she tugs up the neckline of the dress and blinks at me. I resist smirking as she tucks hair behind her ear twice.

“Well,” she says, “aren’t we going to eat?”

“I’m going to eat.”

“I’m not?”

“As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one meal at this table, and it’s you.”

My ears pick up her slow swallow, my eyes the curl of her hands in her lap. “That sounds like a threat,” she says quietly.

I bend over, flatten one hand on the table and wrap the other around the arm of her chair. “It’s not. This is a threat: if you’re not naked and spread out on this table in two seconds, I’m going to spank you so hard, you won’t know up from down.”

If you look up British in the dictionary…A-list celebrity Jamie Jaymeson’s name would be next to it. Along with charming, witty, man-whore, and a lot of other adjectives that he wouldn’t appreciate being attached to his name.
He has everything in the world going for him.
Until fate decides his number’s finally up.

She wants to date someone else.
He wants to kiss her.

When opposites attract, sometimes the only option you have is to leap—and trust the fact that when you fall—that special someone falls too.

 Excerpt from Fall

“Are you alright?” A voice jolted me out of my hell.

“Shit!” The cup tipped off the table; I barely caught it with my left hand. Heart racing, I glared at Pris. “Are you trying to kill me?”

“Mugs don’t kill. Guns do.” She grinned.

“Cute, you should put that on a t-shirt,” I mumbled.

“Maybe I will.” Her voice was light, teasing. Why the hell wasn’t she in bed?

Bed. Bed. Bed. Sex. Shit. Bloody. Freaking. Hell.

My eyes scanned her half-naked body. She was wearing my boxers. Mine. Something that had once been against my skin was now touching hers. I’d probably never wash those boxers, I’d still be eighty and sleeping with them under my pillow telling myself that I made the right choice in leaving her behind, in keeping my heart closed in a cage where it belonged.

“Are you okay?” Pris took a tentative step toward me, her hand reaching out, making a beeline for my arm.

Her fingers grazed my skin.

I jerked back. “Uh, yeah.” Laughing, I grabbed an extra cup. “I just couldn’t fall asleep so I thought I’d make some tea.”

“Tea?” Her eyebrows rose. “How very proper.”

“That’s me,” I said dryly. “All…” My eyes raked over her muscular legs. “…proper.”

Clearing her throat, she stepped around me and grabbed the tea that I’d been holding onto like a lifeline. The way I figured, was if I was keeping my hands occupied then I wouldn’t be touching her. I wouldn’t be forcing myself on her, right? If I was touching tea I wouldn’t be touching tits.

Aw, shit.

I think I just made it worse.

Because my eyes naturally went to her chest, then snapped away like I was a fifth grader with his very first crush.

“So…” Pris ignored my jerky movements. She probably thought I was about ready to piss my pants or something. Ants in the pants, ants in the pants! Yes. I was officially reverting back to my childhood.

Trauma does that to a person.

So does delirium.

Insanity.

That’s what I was experiencing, because, dear God, she had vanilla-scented skin. I leaned toward her, my head turning into her shoulder.

“What are you doing?” she whispered.

“Checking.” I cleared my throat and stepped away.

“For?”

“Bed bugs.”

Yes. I’d just said bed bugs. I just officially ruined the mood and gave men everywhere a bad name.

“Eww!” She jumped into the air. “You have bed bugs?”

“No!” I yelled. “Of course not! But one should always be careful when one is staying…” I waved my hand into the air. “…abroad.”

“Stop saying one,” she snapped.

“Sorry.”

Shaking her head, she put a tea bag in each mug. The kettle whistled, prompting her to fill the mugs with the steaming water. I let her do it. My mind had left me and I knew my body was next to go — next in the very long line of betrayal. I figured if I touched the kettle I’d somehow find a way to burn my nether parts off. Because really, that’s just the type of night I was having.

“Here.” Pris thrust the mug into my hand, setting hers on the counter to cool, then jumped up and sat so she was at eye level with me. “I’m sorry you can’t sleep. Is there anything I can do?”

Yeah. She could stop — just stop — breathing so effing close to me.

Wait, did that mean I wanted her to die?

Shit. I was turning into a serial killer.

“No,” I croaked. “It happens sometimes.” I blew across the mug. “I’m sorry I woke you up.”

“You didn’t.” She picked up her mug and lifted it to her lips pausing before taking a sip. “I fell asleep right away, and then, I don’t know, I guess my body wasn’t ready to go to bed yet. I woke up and heard you rummaging around in the kitchen.”

I winced. “Sorry. I tried to be quiet.”

“Jamie Jaymeson being quiet. You let me know when you discover you have that particular talent.”

With a laugh I clinked my mug to hers. “Cheers.”

Pris took a sip then jerked the cup back. “Ouch.”

“What?” I set my mug down and reached for hers, setting it next to mine.

She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “It’s not a big deal I think I just burnt my lip.”

“Let me see.” I stood in between her legs and braced either side of her face with my hands.

In hindsight… that was where I went wrong.

I knew I was struggling — I should have never touched her. I should have left her alone. I should have taken a step away instead of forward.

“Your lips look…” Incredible. Delicious. Plump. “Unharmed.” I inwardly groaned.

“Good.” Her answer was low, hypnotic, her tongue reached out and licked her lower lip.

And my body took the bait.

With a moan I crushed my mouth against hers and lifted her body against mine.

Her arms went around my neck as I devoured her lips — they tasted so sweet. Her body was hot, it slid against mine. My reaction was so violent I almost dropped her onto the floor.

Pris’s tongue pushed into my mouth. Damn, the girl was aggressive. I loved it. Smiling against her mouth I bit down on her lip and let her taste me, let her explore as my hands moved to her hips, setting her feet on the floor as I still held her body against mine.

Slowly, I slid my hands underneath her shirt, and lifted, the friction of my hands against her skin made me dizzy. Pris wasn’t just my obsession — she was my damn downfall. She made me feel weak, like I was drowning but I didn’t want to be saved. For the first time, I wanted to pull someone else down with me. And stay there.

Her breath hitched as my hands reached her bra.

She pulled back, slightly.

But it was enough for my brain to function on a logical level. I wanted to give her all of myself — but I had absolutely nothing to give her.

The math didn’t make sense.

I’d give her all I had — which was nothing.

And she’d give me everything.

“Pris,” I murmured against her mouth. “I’m sorry.” I stepped back, still gripping her wrists. “That shouldn’t have happened. It’s late and—”

“—what?” She jerked away from me, rubbing one wrist with her other hand.

“No, don’t be mad. Please.” Why did I feel like getting on my knees and begging?

“I wouldn’t survive it if you said you hated me right now. I know it’s what I deserve. I know I’m an ass. I’m a whore. I’m all those things, but please, please don’t say this changes anything. I can’t…” Dammit. “I can’t lose you, Pris. You’re the only real friend I’ve had.”

Book Review: The Seaside Series (#1-#3.5 Seaside) by Rachel van Dyken

The Seaside Series: Boxed Set (Seaside, #1-3.5)The Seaside Series: Boxed Set by Rachel Van Dyken

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I bought this series as a box set so I'm just going to review it as one big book since I read straight through.

Rachel Van Dyken is one of my favorite authors. Not just for her writing but because she's such a kind lady in real life. I'm part of her fan group on Facebook and she's always on their asking how everyone is doing so I just praise her for being her.

The Seaside Series is one of a kind. It's just so presh and cute and the characters all ROCK.... literally. We start with Nat Murray a senior at Seaside High School and how she bumps into two guys who will forever change her world: Alec Daniels and Demetri Daniels otherwise known as the famous rock duo AD2. Everybody is going crazy for these two but it's the two of them who attract the most attention out of Nat... Can somebody say LOVE TRIANGLE? We all know I'm not a fan of love triangles but I really love RachVD so I went with it.. and she took me on a rollercoaster. They've all go their own set of issues and some incredibly dark pasts, but they all thrive on their own. We meet new characters along the way: Alyssa, Jaymeson, and Bob the Bodyguard.

The books go like this:
Tear: Alec and Nat's story
Pull: Demetri and Alyssa's story
Shatter: Alec's internal battles and his relationship with Nat (after events in Pull)
Forever: Alec and Nat's conclusion

Overall, I'm really happy with this Series. I cannot wait for Fall, Jaymeson's story!! And also Demetri and Alyssa's conclusion. The thing about Rachel is she writes very quick reads so I'm glad I waited for the box set or else I would have been dying waiting for the next books! I'm giving this series 4 STARS out of 5 STARS. Go read this book lovers!!

Synopsis
Sometimes doing the wrong thing feels so right...

I'm a player. I'm an asshole. I'm someone you should stay away from.

I have demons.
I've made mistakes.
And the biggest can't be taken back.

I've gone to hell and back in twenty-nine years and I'm only now coming to terms with moving forward, righting my wrongs, and making amends. Except not everyone deserves forgiveness. Sometimes the damage done is beyond repair.
Everyday is exactly the same. I focus on the pain, in the quest to feel and forget, but I remember everything. When I close my eyes the darkness encroaches and some days it feels like the things that kill me are the things that make me feel alive.
heartdividerPost
Excerpt
I hovered over her sweet body, the soft flesh beneath my fingers like fucking silk. Her hands laced in the rungs of the headboard above her head, propping her breasts high and full for me. Her head was thrown back in ecstasy, full lips formed in a a perfect O as moans escaped her throat.

She was fucking stunning. I moved in and out of her, slowing my pace, hitting her as deep as I could, rounding my hips with each slow thrust and drag. She was everything, had been my everything for a few months, the only one that had ever gotten me.

All of me.

The me that no one else had ever seen.

Fuck of it was, she was my brother’s fiancée.

I’d fucking taken her right from under him.

I hadn’t meant to, I don’t think she’d meant to either, it’d just happened one night, and there’d been no going back.

And now here we were, months later, I was still plowing into her—taking her, owning her, making her mine—every fucking night in my bed, hearing her call my name, her eyes hazy with lust and love when I finished.

Except tonight was different.

Tonight was the last time.

Tonight I was ending it.

My heart clutched in my chest as the words floated through my head. My eyes burned with the pain of it.

I didn’t want to let her go, but more than anything, I was sick of running. And seeing my brother again had finally opened my eyes.

This was it.

This was it for us. For me and her. For the girl that had wrapped her fingers around my soul and held it so fucking tightly it was as if my every fucking breath depended on her.
